Arenas were a bad move

Postby Thoradan » Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:44 pm

I found this on a Spuggnort's newsletter I get and also thought "duh", but here's proof!

"Blizzard's Rob Pardo Says Arenas Were a Mistake - Rob Pardo, Blizzards VP of game design, recently stated in an interview that arenas were the single biggest mistake in WoW's history. Now, I am not personally a PvPer so this to me is like a "duh" kind of thing, but the statement came as a surprise to much of the WoW community. Pardo also talks about the many successes they have had with game changes since launch like shrinking raid sizes, the addition of Heroic dungeons and much more. To read the full interview head on over to Warcry and have a look!"

I can't even really imagine the game now if it didn't have to be balanced around stupid arenas but it could be totally different!

Now that they admitted to the mistake, we can finally move away from it!
In a roleplaying game, the D20 determines if you hit your opponent, the damage die how well, and the ridiculous homebrewed critical hit chart how badly you just stabbed them in the junk.

Actually...they kind of retracted a bit in a later comment. They aren't going anywhere any time soon. They said the mistake was in how they were implemented, not in the idea itself. Personally, I think they were a bad idea all around :)

Well, for one thing, I'd be beating Riese's dps like I'm MEANT to.

So Iggie, where do you get all your information and news? You seem to always be really well informed on stuff in the game or things that they're updating or adding so I'm just curious where I should go if you have a good site or something to visit ;)

"I think it is important to reiterate that we like the arenas and the arena gameplay, but that we regret the methods of how the arenas were implemented, which turned out to be a tough endeavour indeed. The arena implementation has caused quite a few headaches and frustrations for many people, but things have become better over time though. Of course there is still room for improvements and there is still much work to be done to improve the World of Warcraft PvP experience."

"It was quoted before, but I think it is necessary to repeat that we do feel that we have shifted the PvP attention a little too much towards Arenas and away from the Battlegrounds, and that we plan to fix this with Cataclysm."

I usually just keep an eye on Wow.com or mmochampion.com

mmochampion has a nice blue tracker feature and does a lot of data mining of patch stuff as well. If there's something important that a blue posts (like the way they are releasing Ice Crown) they usually bump it to the front page.
